E-Mail Marketing for E-Commerce: Tools, Flows and Real Costs in 2026

Last revised

Email is the highest-margin channel in e-commerce – but only if the right flows run on the right tool. This guide shows which automations actually drive store revenue, what the leading tools cost with real pricing, and how to choose for your shop size.

The five flows that drive store revenue

Before comparing tools, know what you need them for. In almost every shop, five automations generate the bulk of email revenue: the welcome series, abandoned cart, browse abandonment, post-purchase and win-back flows.

Any tool you shortlist must handle all five natively – with product blocks, dynamic content from your shop and revenue attribution per flow. If a tool needs workarounds for these basics, it is not an e-commerce tool.

  • Welcome series: converts new subscribers within the first days
  • Abandoned cart: typically the single highest-revenue flow
  • Browse abandonment: follows up on product views without a cart
  • Post-purchase: cross-sell, review requests, replenishment
  • Win-back: reactivates customers before they churn

Klaviyo: the benchmark – at a price

Klaviyo sets the standard for data depth: predictive segments, CLV forecasts and the tightest Shopify integration. The free plan covers 250 profiles and 500 emails per month; after that, billing scales per active profile – including inactive ones.

Klaviyo earns its price when you actually use the data platform. Shops that only run the five standard flows often pay for capabilities they never touch.

Omnisend: the balanced e-commerce specialist

Omnisend covers the same audience – Shopify, WooCommerce, BigCommerce – with email, SMS and web push in one tool. Free plan: 250 contacts and 500 emails per month; Standard from $16 per month, Pro from $59. Omnisend advertises savings of up to 35% versus Klaviyo.

For most small and mid-size shops, Omnisend is the most balanced choice: all five revenue flows are ready-made, and 24/7 support is included even on cheaper plans.

Brevo: the budget option for large lists

Brevo bills by email volume instead of contacts: the free plan allows 100,000 contacts and 300 emails per day, Starter starts at $9 per month. For shops with large lists and moderate sending frequency, no other tool comes close on price.

The trade-off: shop integrations and e-commerce segmentation are less deep than Klaviyo or Omnisend. Brevo fits when budget and European data hosting matter most.

Drip, Mailchimp and ActiveCampaign: the alternatives

Drip sits between simple newsletter tools and Klaviyo: strong visual workflows, deep Shopify integration and revenue attribution – a good fit for growing brands that have outgrown Mailchimp.

Mailchimp (free up to 500 contacts, Essentials from $13 per month) works for simple shop newsletters but hits limits with complex e-commerce automation. ActiveCampaign (from $29 per month) brings the deepest automation logic plus a CRM – strong when you combine email with a sales process.

How to choose for your shop

Start with the math: calculate each tool's price at your current list size and at double that size. Then check integration depth for your shop platform – a missing native integration costs more in workarounds than the subscription saves.

Our short version: maximum data depth and budget is secondary → Klaviyo. Balanced features and price → Omnisend. Large list, tight budget → Brevo. Growing brand with automation focus → Drip.

Checklist before choosing an e-commerce email tool

  • Calculate the price at 2x your current list size
  • Verify native integration with your shop platform (Shopify, WooCommerce, etc.)
  • Check that all five revenue flows exist as templates
  • Test the free plan with a real customer segment
  • Confirm revenue attribution per flow is built in
  • Plan migration: export profiles, rebuild top flows first
