MCP for marketers: letting AI assistants work directly with ad accounts and tools
Last revised
The Model Context Protocol (MCP) is an open standard that lets AI assistants such as Claude or ChatGPT talk to external systems. For marketers, that means the assistant can query data directly — and, if you allow it, prepare changes — instead of you exporting reports and pasting them into a chat.
How MCP works, without the jargon
An MCP server acts as a translator between an AI assistant and a service such as a Meta or Google ad account. The server describes the available actions — for example 'list campaigns', 'get metrics for the last 7 days' or 'change budget'. The assistant picks the action that fits your question.
Because the standard is open, the same server works with different assistants. MCP platform vendors usually bundle several of these connections and handle sign-in, multi-account management and permissions.
Typical marketing use cases
In practice, recurring analysis and routine tasks move first:
- Performance questions in plain language: which ad sets had the highest CPA this week?
- Cross-account reporting for agencies with many clients
- Drafts of new ads or campaigns that a human approves
- Matching ad data with analytics or CRM data
Where the limits are
AI assistants can misread numbers or claim correlations the data doesn't support. For budget decisions, check the raw figure before acting. Platform APIs also still have rate limits and reporting delays.
Security and permissions
The key question is what the assistant is allowed to do. Read-only access is almost always enough for analysis. Write access — changing budgets or publishing ads — should require confirmation for each action.
Also ask where credentials are stored, whether you can grant access to specific accounts only, and whether every action is logged.
Getting started in three steps
Start with one account and read-only access. For a week, ask the questions you would normally answer with a report and compare the answers with the numbers in the platform. Only add accounts or write permissions once that works reliably.
Questions to ask MCP vendors
- Which platforms and accounts are supported?
- Can read access be granted separately from write access?
- Does every change require confirmation?
- Is there a complete action log?
- Where and how are credentials stored?
- Which AI assistants does the service work with?
