Open Source PIM Software in 2026: Akeneo, Pimcore, AtroPIM and UnoPim Compared
Last revised
Open source PIM is the most common answer to "free PIM software" – and it is genuinely license-free. But a PIM is not a spreadsheet: someone has to host it, update it and model your product data. This guide compares the four relevant open source options and shows when self-hosting really saves money.
The four open source PIMs worth a look
Akeneo Community Edition is the best-known open source PIM with the largest ecosystem of connectors and integrators. Pimcore combines PIM, DAM and master data management in one open source platform and suits teams that want one system for products and assets. AtroPIM, built on the AtroCore framework, offers a flexible data model and a REST API with optional paid modules. UnoPim is a younger Laravel-based PIM from Webkul that is fully free and easy for PHP developers to extend.
- Akeneo Community – largest ecosystem, enterprise upgrade path
- Pimcore – PIM + DAM + MDM in one stack
- AtroPIM – flexible data model, paid add-on modules
- UnoPim – lightweight, Laravel, no license fees
What open source PIM really costs
License fees are zero, but plan for hosting (from a few dozen dollars per month for a small server), a developer for setup and upgrades, and time for data modeling. For a small catalog, those costs can exceed a cloud plan such as Plytix, which starts at €0 and goes to €149 per month for Pro.
Open source pays off when you have in-house developers, need full control over data and hosting, or have a data model that SaaS tools cannot represent.
Open source vs cloud PIM
Cloud PIMs like Plytix, Sales Layer or Bluestone PIM take care of hosting, updates and connectors, so teams without developers get started faster. Open source wins on flexibility, data ownership and long-term cost at scale. Many teams start with open source and move to the vendor's managed or enterprise edition later – Akeneo and Pimcore both offer that path.
Checklist before choosing an open source PIM
- Confirm a developer is available for setup and updates
- Estimate hosting, backup and security costs per year
- Check connectors for your shop, ERP and marketplaces
- Test import of a real catalog sample with variants and translations
- Check the upgrade path to a managed or enterprise edition
