How to choose an SEO tool: the features you actually need
Last revised
SEO software ranges from free crawlers to suites costing several hundred dollars a month. The right choice depends less on company size than on which tasks you do every week — and which markets you need data for.
The four core jobs
Almost every SEO tool covers at least one of these. Suites combine all four; specialist tools excel at one:
- Keyword research: search volume, difficulty and intent
- Rank tracking: measure your positions on a schedule
- Backlink analysis: evaluate links to your site and competitors
- Site audit: find technical issues such as broken links or slow pages
Data quality depends on the market
Search volume and rankings are estimates from each vendor's database, and their accuracy varies by country. The large US suites have deep US data; for smaller markets, local specialists can be more accurate.
Test with keywords whose real performance you know from Google Search Console. The closer the estimate is to your actual data, the more reliable the tool is for your market.
One suite or a stack of specialists?
A suite means fewer logins and consistent reports, which is often the most efficient option for small teams. If you track thousands of keywords daily or crawl very large sites, specialist tools are frequently cheaper and more precise.
A common setup: free Google Search Console as the foundation, a crawler for technical audits, and one tool for keyword and competitor data.
Limits hidden in pricing
SEO tools rarely charge per seat alone. They meter projects, tracked keywords, crawled pages and daily queries. Figure out which limit you'll hit first — agencies usually run out of projects, ecommerce sites run out of crawl budget.
What no tool replaces
Software surfaces problems and opportunities but doesn't fix them. Good content, clean site structure and real links still take work. An expensive tool with no time to act on it delivers less than a cheaper one whose recommendations get done.
